Everywhere in China seems to be continually being torn apart and put back together. The sidewalks on the main street outside the university were torn up about a month ago. They have had some work done on them, but are still a mess. It is definitely a construction zone with uncovered manholes, ditches, broken up concrete and other hazards that in the US would have led to several dozen lawsuits already. Chinese take it right in stride with women walking through the broken up concrete with high heels.
My dorm is being renovated. (It is about time!) The workmen arrive at about 06:30 every morning and start banging away and using power saws. They do it seven days a week. I am sure some people who have come home late from a hard night of partying don't enjoy it...or maybe they partied too hard and are oblivious. The mess is not really cleaned up at the end of the day. There are little mounds of broken sheetrock, joint compound splattered everywhere, and joint compound dust everywhere.
