Not allowed in. Why?

Foreigners are not allowed in the Chinese dorms. Chinese are not allowed in the foreigner dorms. I thought it was just restricted to bringing back the opposite sex to the dorms (almost went to jail back in 1995 for something similar in Shanghai at a hotel), but yesterday my Chinese friend who helped me buy a computer was going to come back to my room to help me set it up since Windows is in Chinese. The doorman wouldn't allow him in citing that he didn't have the proper "certificate". When asked what the proper certificate was everything started getting very vague. It was not a student ID because my friend had that. It was something else that could not be determined.

One of my friends told me that when he tried to bring a Chinese friend back to his room the front desk stopped him. His Chinese friend got it out of the front desk that if she went up to his room the front desk would have to notify the police of everyone involved. Nobody really wants that to happen.

The dorms have curfews. For the foreign students it is not really a problem. The front desk people expect us to come in at all hours. Some of them sleep in the lobby and leave the door unlocked. The others get up and unlock the door seemingly without getting too annoyed. ("Stupid foreigners staying out late!") But if you are Chinese the dorms lock at midnight and you can't really get in until they open at 06:00. The door people are NOT happy to be woken up at all.
