Yesterday was my birthday so my language partners treated me to a birthday party along with Australian Ben. We went to the conference center restaurant which was pretty good. Mr. Bian brought a bottle of bai jiu (Chinese white wine) from his home town (Lang Fang). It was better than the typical bai jiu that burns your throat and eats your stomach walls. It actually was pretty smooth with a good taste -- maybe because it was only 90 proof, apparently weak bai jiu is 120 proof. He also brought a bottle of Chinese red wine from the town he was born in. It was not bad.
Mr. Tian brought a birthday cake and birthday candle. The birthday candle was quite impressive as it was more closely related to fireworks and regular birthday candles. You lit the center and the candle opened up into a flower lighting several candles and a flare in the middle that shot a flame about a foot up for 30 seconds. Additionally it sang happy birthday. I'll have to post a picture of it. I liked the cake as the frosting was not anywhere as sweet as American icing.
We had a good time hanging out and speaking Chinglish with each other. I learned how to say "serve".
