Chinese Primer for Olympics

Luckily, for the Olympics you don't need to know much Chinese.

Here are the most important things to know:
1) Jia you (ja yo) ”加油“ -- It means 'try hard', 'work hard', 'Go!' often used as: "zhong guo, jia you!" (jung gwo, ja yo!) or "China, Go!', 'China, try hard!' (Listen to the background noise at any event with a Chinese competitor and you will hear it.)

2) zhong guo (jung gwo) ”中国“ -- China; often used with 'jia you'

3) dui (de-ai, sort of...) “对” -- team; "zhong guo dui, jia you!"

4) hao qiu (how cho) “好球” -- Good ball! Any sport that involves a ball, this is what you will hear for any action that could be considered good: a pass, a shot, anything.

5) fei chang hao qiu (fay chang how cho) “非常好球” -- very good ball; see above, but think, very good

6) hao de (how de) “好的” -- good

7) bu hao (bu how) “不好” -- bad (not good)

8) piao liang (pee-ow lee-ang) “漂亮” -- pretty, nice; used by itself to say a play was pretty

9) fei chang piao liang (fay chang pee-ow lee-ang) “非常漂亮” -- very pretty; see above but more so.

You now know 80% of the Chinese necessary to understand a Chinese sports broadcast involving a sport that uses a ball.
