Misc thoughts

I was very happy to find the Beijing accent is actively not taught in our language classes. The teachers make fun of it asking, "Do you really want to learn to speak like a taxi driver?" Most taxi drivers are almost unintelligible even to some Chinese.

Speaking teacher told us that girls should not nap because it will make them fat. They should do sports instead.

The Chinese students don't have showers in their dorms. Every night you see the girls trooping across campus in their pajamas with their shower stuff in a little basket.

Everything in Beijing is constantly changing. A few days ago all the sidewalks around the university were torn up. Granite curbs are being put in. Sometimes I wonder how much really has to be done and what is done just to keep a million migrant workers occupied. (Oh, yeah, every thing has to be done before the Olympics. 100 days and counting...) Australian Ben believes everything is changing to keep the masses pacified. If things were seen to be stagnating, they'd be upset, but there is always something new to occupy their thoughts.
